About the programme

As an Apprentice on the Software Engineering Academy, you’ll be at the forefront of digital innovation as you start building your career.

  • This course lasts for 18 months, upon which successful completion of the qualification you’ll achieve a Diploma in IT, Software, Web & Telecoms Professionals, Level 4.
  • For the first 4 weeks, you’ll be on a boot camp training programme giving you experience in software engineering principles and languages such as Agile, Java development, test-driven development and continuous build and integration.
  • You’ll then be placed in different areas of Sky to work on real projects called ‘Educational Projects’. You’ll work alongside senior Software Engineers and experience everyday life at Sky in an exciting technical environment.  
  • You’ll have the chance to get to grips with open source tools and web technologies such as Ruby, Scala, Javascript, PHP, Java, HTML, CSS, Node JS, Python, Jenkins, GIT, etc.    
  • Happy to talk flexible working.

What we look for

  • A passion for technology and a keen interest in programming and coding.
  • Ideally you’ll have some coding experience. This could be from school or from having a go at home.

Technology (Livingston, Scotland)

How our programme works:

As an Apprentice on this programme, you’ll be placed within one of three teams depending on the outcome of your assessment centre. The teams are as follows:

  • Conditional Access Team – This department is responsible for the testing and supporting our encryption technologies and also for controlling the Viewing Cards across Sky UK. You’ll learn about the full lifecycle involved to ensure the delivery of a seamless customer experience.

 

  • IDS Development Team – In this role, you’ll play a key part in implementing the best approach to meet the requirements of our customers. You’ll show your analytical skills in developing the most appropriate solution and demonstrate your attention to detail by testing and delivering these requirements. It’s a vital role but we’ll provide you with all the support and guidance you need to deliver great results. To be successful, you’ll have a strong maths background, ideally having completed Highers in Maths.

 

  • UK Information Systems Team – You will gain experience in a number of Software Engineering areas through rotations, which may include Testing, Automation, Technical Analysis, Operational Support and Development. The teams provide services to both our Contact Centre and Engineer communities as well as supporting various online and interactive services provided to Sky’s 11 million UK customer base.

Technology (Osterley, West London)

How our programme works:

As an Apprentice on this two year course, you’ll be placed within one of three teams depending on the outcome of your assessment centre. The teams include:

 

  • Operations – Through workplace rotations, you will learn about planning live programme feeds, checking incoming signals for quality, ensuring programme schedules come together and that our channels stay on air over satellite and online.

The department operates 24/7 and the role includes 12 hour shift rotations from 07:00-19:00 or 19:00—07:00 (although these hours can vary in some Operational departments). You’ll be aged 18 or over to be considered for this role, be a strong team player and logical thinker, plus have excellent attention to detail.

 

  • Integration & Test – This department is responsible for testing the technology that connects our TV systems to our online and satellite products such as Sky Q, Sky Store, NowTV and Sky Go. Things you’ll learn will include finding out how our TV software works and how to find bugs and work with other technology teams to create solutions to problems discovered during testing. An interest in the testing process is key and a curious mind with a passion for problem-solving.   

 

  • Network Operations – Through workplace rotations, you will experience the full Network Operations lifecycle giving you exposure to all functions that provide support 24/7. This includes our Front Line Service Operations, Security, Broadband, Talk, Sky Mobile and many more. A collaborative and personable approach is important particularly as you move around teams as part of the rotations.

Which is why you’ll need energy and a determination to help our customers day to day.  Dedicated to doing whatever it takes to resolve their question or issue. You’ll be well supported by your line manager and team, helping you to achieve a nationally-recognised Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Customer Service.

 

How the programme works

This is a one year programme and if you successfully pass the programme, you’ll join as a permanent member of the team.

  • You’ll begin the apprenticeship with an initial 4-5 week training period, where you'll receive constant coaching and support from your trainer.
  • Once you’ve completed the training you’ll start on the phones putting what you’ve learnt into practice, with the support from your manager and assessor.
  • Your typical working pattern will be Thursday- Sunday 12:00-20:00.

 

What we look for

You’ll be a positive, confident communicator able to work well as part of a team. You’ll be keen to find out all about how our business works as well as develop your existing  knowledge about our products and services. You’ll have a minimum of two GCSE grades A*-C in English and Maths (or equivalent).

 

 

Customer Service - Contact Centre (Newcastle)

How our programme works

For the first week, you’ll be on a bespoke Marketing immersion week. This will provide you with the fundamental skills needed to understand the basics of Marketing. Following this, your first year will be spent in one of two Brand teams (Digital Marketing or Mobile Marketing). The second year of your programme will be spent doing two six month rotations across our Trading teams.

Digital Marketing (Year 1)You’ll learn about developing digital marketing communications, gain an understanding of multiple digital media channels, predominantly display advertising, video and native (including social). You’ll work closely with our media planning and buying agency to ensure the highest standards are met across our activity. The team is highly ambitious, driven and dynamic and prides itself on driving the development of world-class approaches to Digital Marketing.

Mobile Marketing (Year 1)You’ll help to build awareness of our latest innovation, Sky Mobile. You’ll support the team in managing the successful delivery of campaigns in line with agreed objectives and brand metrics. You’ll also be working with creative agencies to develop and execute compelling campaign ideas whist ensuring the work is on time and on budget.

Sales and Marketing (Year 2)

You’ll support the Consumer Marketing Team in the marketing and sales performance of our communications and entertainment products. Deeply embedded in the brand, you’ll get an understanding of everything there is to know about our products in order to gain new customers and keep existing ones too. You’ll also help ensure all our products are commercially viable and exactly what our customers want.

  •  You’ll be highly ambitious and driven.

About the programme

Our Finance teams cover everything from financial reporting to management accounting and investor relations. And our team is second to none. We’ve been voted Employer of the Year at the CIMA awards for the entire European media sector.

You’ll take part in rotations within Finance whilst undertaking a Business Improvement Project over the two years of the programme. At the end of your course you'll acheive a CIMA Higher Apprenticeship in Management Accounting, Level 4. This will develop your commercial awareness and provide you with experience in accounting techniques. So, whether you’re making sure invoices and expenses are paid on time, ensuring Sky’s monies are collected or even assisting with Sky’s tax reporting, you’ll gain real life exposure to helping make our finance team award-winning. Wherever you work, you will quickly learn the importance of putting our customers’ interests at the forefront of what you do.

Qualification achieved: CIMA Higher Apprenticeship in Management Accounting, Level 4

What we look for

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to juggle multiple tasks
  • Good numeracy skills
  • Excellent team working skills as you’ll be part of a fast paced, fun Finance team

About the programme

Our Finance teams cover everything from financial reporting to management accounting and investor relations. And our team is second to none. We’ve been voted Employer of the Year at the CIMA awards for the entire European media sector.You’ll be part of the Commercial Finance team within the Sales & Marketing group, focusing on key month end processes, variance analysis, budgeting and forecasting cycles. In addition, you’ll learn how to prepare management reports and consolidate/analyse data from various sources. This team is responsible for managing key financial information helping to support the Sales and Marketing teams stay head of the competition.

You will be supported as you study alongside your role for the CIMA Higher Certificate in Management Accounting, level 4, and complete assignments to showcase the skills you’ll learn.

You’ll quickly learn the importance of putting our customers’ interests at the forefront of what you do, working with teams in other areas of the business to meet and exceed targets. There will be the opportunity to develop your commercial awareness and gain experience in accounting techniques.

As an Apprentice on this programme, you’ll be expected to be part of all aspects of the editorial process. From news gathering to researching stories, through to booking guests and writing scripts. Gaining insight into one of the world's leading news organisations, you'll learn how we deliver news across all our platforms - on TV, mobile phones, on social media and to commercial radio stations.

  • This is a two year course
  • Qualification achieved: Diploma in Journalism, Level 3
  • In the first year, you’ll spend the first three months at college as you work towards achieving your qualification, attending Sky’s offices as and when required to support your training. 
  • When the course is completed, you’ll spend periods of time across departments within Sky News. This will include spending time with reporters, producers, camera crews, gallery staff and researchers and eventually work across all areas of our output - TV, mobile, radio and social media.
  • In the second year, we'll help you select an area to start specialising in.
