Lisa tells us the best things about working in Broadband Tech.
“I work as part of a wonderful team who collaborate and share best practice tips, which helps the team to flourish"
Name: Lisa Price
Job title: Broadband Tech Expert
Describe your role in one word: Rewarding.
What area of Sky do you work in and what do you do on a daily basis? I work in Home Service as part of the new Broadband Tech team. I visit different customers every day and help them with any broadband or Wi-Fi issues they may be experiencing.
How did you get into your role? I applied for the role in November 2016, and was one of the first teams to complete the training for the role in December. Prior to this role I worked as a contract Engineer for Openreach. In that role I installed telephone lines, upgraded customers to fibre and also renewed underground copper cables on the external network. I was really happy that the skills I have were transferable for my new role as Broadband Tech Expert.
What is the most enjoyable thing about your role and what surprised you most? I love meeting new people every day, and I find it exciting that no job is exactly the same. I also enjoy the challenge that the role brings, as you’re always solving different problems. You get the best feeling when a customer is back online and are able to carry on with their day. People depend on their Broadband for many different reasons and to be able to help them is a fantastic feeling.
I work as part of a wonderful team who collaborate and share best practice tips, which helps the team to flourish. I also have an excellent mentor, Alexei, who is an outstanding role model and inspires me to strive to provide the best possible service for our customers.
How have you made a difference in your role? I’m passionate about my role and proud to work here, which shows through in my dedication to our customers.
Describe your work/life balance? I work evening shifts which took getting used to at first but after a few weeks I was able to find the right balance. I tend to do my leisure activities such as swimming or going to the gym in the morning and then when I get home from work I do things like take my dogs for a walk along the beach. I also have every other weekend off work which means I can spend quality time with my friends and family.
Have you had the opportunity to progress? Development, including self-development, is encouraged and supported here. I’ll often take online courses to aid my self-development. I’ve also been involved in a number of great experiences such as going to our head office in Osterley for a photo shoot which was also an opportunity to network with different people from the business.
I’d like to become a field coach, training our new recruits, and recently had the opportunity to further develop the skills needed for this role. I worked with some of my team on broadband optimisation and fault rectification, passing on my technical experience.
Your top application tip for people applying now – what did you do to stand out when you were applying: Prepare well and do your research on the role you’re applying for. Always be yourself and believe in yourself, don't be afraid to showcase your achievements and strengths.
An interesting fact no one else knows about you: I’m a qualified gymnastics coach and still like to participate in gymnastics and trampolining.
